I Love October

I must admit I love October for a few reasons. My birthday falls very early in October along with my husband's birthday which falls a few days after mine so there's always lots of giving and receiving for us in October...Even at 33 I still love getting presents in bed on the morning of my Birthday!!

I always seem to get a bit of a personal decorating bug in October. I think it has something to do with the pending emails from suppliers advising of their upcoming pre-Christmas order cut-off dates. The thought of them closing their books for the year without a few little tidbits for home makes me a bit demented. Every night this week I've trawled a boot-load of fabric samples home for consideration and let me tell you I'm not really the most popular person in our house at the moment as every time one of the boys walks past the lounge room I ask...."And what about this fabric?" They are completely over it.

I also love the buzz of clients at this time of year as they too recognize the fact that if they don't make a decision now then it will be all over red rover until next year.

The other thing I like about October is the weather and all the flowering gardens around the place. Even just driving into work is a pleasure as flowers are blooming everywhere. The Jacaranda trees are also just starting to bloom which puts a beautiful purplish haze over Brisbane.

There are just so many lovely things to enjoy in October starting this weekend. We must also recognize that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. For more information visit the National Breast Cancer website here. Mrs Blandings always posts pink in October so here's a little hint of pink above from a pink girl through and through.

Happy October Everyone!

First Snap! ... Tori and Joe

Posted by Mariah, Photos by Trish:

Want to look like you are really in love in your wedding photos?
Follow Tori and Joe's lead... does it get much more romantical? Nope.
Tori was a little shall we say "diligent" leading up to the wedding. This is a girl who likes to organize, likes to lead, and knows what she wants! However, you'd be hard pressed to find a bride who was more laid back or enjoyed herself more on her wedding day then Tori.
I think Tori is full of surprises and she's going to keep things interesting for Joe for many years to come! Here's to passion and a flawless wedding, cheers!

P.S. Snap shout out to Tori's mom... her partner in planning!

at the eve of it, people in Indonesia usually do Takbir and playing with fireworks.

and the next morning, mass prayers are held in mosques and large open areas around the country.

traditionally, every family in Indonesia celebrated with the traditional dish called ketupat and visiting with family and friends.

charity donations amal are traditionally given at this time.

just prior to lebaran a mass exodus mudik from capital city of Jakarta of over 3 million people occurs as residents return to their villages to celebrate with family and friends.

Dorie is just too cute! So are all her friends who created the French Fridays with Dorie blog site! A warm and enthusiastic Thank You to Rachel, Joel, Alison, Travis, and Laurie for creating and achieving the bright, easy to navigate, informative, and fun site!

Dorie is just as excited as the rest of us who have just tried our very first recipe. She picked our opening 4 dishes for the month of October and we are baking her first choice, one of Dorie's favorites to share with friends: gougeres!

Starting with a cream puff pastry dough, adding Gruyere and a spot of sharp cheddar;

baking into round puffs of golden, crispy perfection;

served with steaming hot cups of mushroom cappuccinos (Bouillon de Champignons Comme un Cappuccino, recipe by Michelin 3-star chef Alain Chapel);

and filled with a family recipe of Pacific shrimp salad.

The anticipation wrapped around being a part of an excited group (more like blogging family) of people like myself who cook from the heart, always excited to share with family and friends, just tickles me. Many of us have been baking together out of Dorie's "Baking from my home to yours" and have become friends along the way.

We are excited to welcome new members and Thank you Dorie for letting us share in your spotlight with the newly published work-of-art: around my french table.

Thank you!!!!! =0)

What a warm and fuzzy feeling to have on an early Friday morning.

Mushroom Cappuccinos

(recipe by Alain Chapel; printed in Oct./2010 Saveur magazine)

(Project Foodie website will also have the recipe)

"To foam the broth, use the steamer attachment on a cappuccino machine, or froth it in a blender." (Alain Chapel, Saveur, Oct. 2010; pg. 98)

Ingredients:

6 T. butter

1 lb. button mushrooms, halved

8 oz. mixed mushrooms, such as oyster, shiitake, and blue foot, thinly sliced, trimmings reserved

1 oz. dried shiitake mushrooms

1 1/2 cups heavy cream

Kosher salt, to taste

Cayenne pepper, to taste

12 crayfish tails, cooked and shelled, or 4 oz. cooked lobster meat, cut into bite-size pieces

4 sprigs fresh chervil or tarragon

Directions:

Heat 3 T. butter in a 3-quart high sided skillet over medium heat. Add button mushrooms and mushroom trimmings and cook, stirring often, until they release their liquid, about 10 minutes. Add 3/4 ounce dried shiitakes and 4 cups of water; boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until liquid has reduced to 3 cups, about 10 minutes. Set a fine-mesh strainer over a 2-quart saucepan. Strain broth, pressing mushrooms with the back of a spoon to extract liquid; discard solids. Add cream to mushroom broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until flavors meld, about 10 minutes. Season broth with salt and a pinch of cayenne and set aside.

In a spice grinder, grind remaining dried shiitake mushrooms to a fine powder. Transfer mushroom powder to a small skillet over medium-high heat and toast, swirling pan constantly until fragrant, about 5 minutes. Transfer mushroom powder to a small bowl; set aside.

Heat remaining butter in the skillet over medium heat. Add mixed mushrooms, season with salt, and cook, stirring gently, until tender, 4-5 minutes.

Add crayfish, season with salt, and cook until hot. Remove pan from heat and set aside.

To serve, foam reserved broth on high speed in a blender or with the steamer attachment on an espresso machine. Mound crayfish mixture in 4 teacups or small bowls, and ladle in broth. Spoon foam on top, dust with mushroom powder, and garnish with chervil.

It's October: Editors' Note

Can you believe it? It's already October. Where did September go? With Fall in full swing and Halloween around the corner we have some great things in store for cupcakeMAG & Sprinkles this month. Not only will Sprinkles be getting a new name - but we have amazing changes to come for both sites - only for the better & we look forward to sharing soon!

We have some great celebrity interviews this month to share -- Denise Richards, Offical Hot Mess, Kendra Wilkinson -- and those are just a few! Along with our Men of Style, the famous Guncles, The Real Housewives of New York star Simon Van Kempen and The Rachel Zoe Project's Brad Goreski!  October is going to be a FABulous month! We will also showcase some of our favorite "hostess with the mostess" - Courtney Dial of Pizzazzerie and The Food Network's Sandra Lee! So stay tuned for a full packed month!

And lastly, as I sit here from my hospital bed, thinking of all the work I have - I can't help but be thankful for the amazing support I received the past few days. For those of you who follow me on Twitter you know that I have been hospitalized for a kidney infection & kidney stones and basically won't stop tweet complaining until this little gal passes. I went it in a few days ago thinking I had a virus and was severely dehydrated. Come to find out -- it was a little bit more right after getting over bronchitis/pneumonia. When it rains it pours! But, I wanted to start this off with a big THANK YOU! Thank you to all of those who read cupcakeMAG, "Like" us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter & everywhere where else you can find us. We are more than grateful for all the support we have received and I am more than grateful for the many cyber hugs, kisses and prayers that I have received over the pass few days. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful group of cupcakeMAG supporters. Thank you all - from the bottom of my heart!

I wanted to say another big thank you to Annie & Isabel -- the uber-stylish hospital gown company for sending the The Anita -- not only did I stand out in the sophisticated and super soft gown (and lots of compliments!) I felt comfortable from all the awful pain I have been in the past few days! And, I didn't have to worry about flashing anyone my boo-tay as I walked to and from the bathroom. It really put a smile on my face. Please, don't judge the messy hair and no make-up.

Stay tuned -- later this month I will giving one away to one of our luck readers in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month! You won't want to miss it.

I would also like to take a moment to bring you up-to-date with our first cupcakeMAG fundraiser. Please browse over to Braden's Hope. Braden is a sweet little 6 year old boy who is battling stage 4 neuroblastoma. We are putting together a fundraiser and need all the help we can get so please spread the word and help us raise awareness for childhood cancer. Please take a moment to browse the site and spread the word. A huge thanks to Bethenny Frankel for sending a bunch of singed goodies for the auction & to all of those participating!

End note: Oprah once said, "Making the decision to look after yourself is the ultimate in healthcare." -- and that is what I shall do this month! Along with looking after all of you! As always, lots of love & thank you!
